Breaking Down Ballistics: Energy, Penetration, and the Story Behind the Numbers

Ballistics charts can look like a mess of digits and abbreviations—velocity here, energy there, trajectories crossing like spiderwebs. But each number has a job. Put them together and you get a story: how your bullet flies, what kind of impact it makes, and whether it has what it takes to cleanly bring down the animal you’re shooting at.Here are the three fundamentals every hunter should understand: kinetic energy, Taylor Knockout Factor, and sectional density.Kinetic Energy (ft-lbs): The Workhorse MetricKinetic energy is the first number everyone sees—and the easiest one to misunderstand. It’s simply the mathematical “work potential” of a moving bullet. Velocity matters more than weight in the formula, which is why light, fast bullets often show impressive energy. It’s a good indicator of destructive potential if the bullet holds together and expands properly. But energy is not a guarantee of effectiveness. A formula on paper doesn’t tell you if the bullet:stays together after impact, mushrooms predictably, penetrates far enough to reach vitals,or sheds velocity too quickly at distance.Energy is like horsepower in a truck—it’s only meaningful if the rest of the machine can use it.Taylor Knockout Factor (TKF): The Old-School “Hit Like a Freight Train” MetricTKF is controversial today, but there’s still value in understanding it.John “Pondoro” Taylor created this metric not to sell ammo or impress engineers, but because he hunted thick-skinned, dangerous game for years and wanted a quick way to compare real-world stopping power. TKF emphasizes three things:Diameter – a wider bullet punches a wider wound channel.Weight – more momentum to keep driving through hide, bone, and muscle.Velocity – enough speed to matter, but not so much it fragments.TKF favors the big, moderate-velocity cartridges that traditional dangerous-game hunters trusted—.375 H&H, .416 Rigby, .458 Win Mag—because those bullets don’t just hit hard, they hit deep and maintain integrity.Modern hunters shouldn’t use TKF as a sole deciding factor, but it’s a good shorthand for understanding why some big-bore rounds “just work” even when their raw energy numbers aren’t the highest.Sectional Density (SD): The Most Ignored—and Most Important—NumberIf energy is the “punch,” sectional density is the “push.”Sectional density describes how much weight is behind each unit of bullet diameter. In simpler terms: how well a bullet drives in a straight line through tissue, bone, fat, and muscle.High SD bullets behave like nails—you hit them, and they drive deep.Low SD bullets behave like hammers—wide, impactful, but don’t push very far.Why SD matters more than most people think:Penetration is what actually reaches lungs, heart, and major vessels. It stabilizes performance across angles—quartering shots, raking shots, or heavy-boned animals. It predicts how far a bullet can travel after expansion, because expansion lowers SD at the moment of impact.SD is the quiet workhorse of terminal ballistics—and most hunters overlook it at their own risk. Why Combine Them? The AnchorShot Lethality Index (ALI)No single number can tell the whole story. The AnchorShot Lethality Index blends energy, TKF, and SD into a unified score so hunters can see at a glance whether a cartridge balances:speedmassdiameterpenetrationand real-world stopping performance…instead of getting lost in isolated variables. It’s not replacing fieldcraft or ethical judgment. It’s simply translating the tangled mess of ballistic charts into one practical, intuitive indicator.Reading the Story Behind the NumbersWhitetail and antelope don’t need monster energy. A balanced bullet that expands reliably and penetrates 12–18 inches is ideal. ALI reflects this balance clearly.Elk, moose, and big black bear require deeper penetration. Here SD and TKF become more important than pure kinetic energy. ALI highlights the cartridges that punch above their energy class.Grizzly and other dangerous game demand both shock and deep, straight penetration. ALI consistently points to the big bores and heavy-for-caliber bullets that have earned their reputations over the last century. In the end, the numbers don’t lie—but they don’t speak plain English either. The ALI is designed to speak that language for you. Read about how ALI is calculated here: ALI Methodology - AnchorShot
